Weekly Wrap-Up

We once again end the week on a sad note. New York lost another leader this week, with the death of former congressman and vice-presidential candidate Jack Kemp. For nearly a quarter of a century, Jack was one of the most dynamic, intelligent, and inspirational voices in the conservative movement.

FOX News has an overview of his accomplishments in sports and politics:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,518721,00.html

This past September, Jack spoke for the last time at a Conservative Party event, when he represented the McCain/Palin ticket at our Presidential nominating meeting. We’ve posted the video on our Facebook page:

Now, on to this week’s news...

Looking for a silver lining to President Obama’s tax-and-spend rampage? Try this: At least the President feels the need to pretend that spending is the problem.

Not much to cling to, I know – especially when we hear the real story about the supposedly “responsible” budget presented by the Obama Administration this week.

The New York Post has a good analysis: “President Obama yesterday proposed cutting $17 billion from the federal budget -- barely one half of 1 percent.”
According to the Post, “Those savings are far exceeded by a 2 1/2-inch thick volume detailing Obama's generous increases for domestic programs. And instead of devoting the savings to defray record deficits, the White House is funneling them back into other programs.”

Read the whole thing here: http://www.nypost.com/seven/05082009/postopinion/editorials/obamas_red_ink_ocean_168154.htm

Even President Obama’s spending cuts show his left-wing instincts. Among programs targeted, according to The New York Daily News: Abstinence-only education (a cut heralded by New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney) and efforts to fight illegal immigration (a cut criticized by Rep. Peter King).

Here’s that story:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/05/08/2009-05-08_bam_budget_puts_kibosh_on_abstinenceonly_sex_ed.html

Also, an ominous but not surprising headline from The Washington Times: “Obama Budget Cuts Target Military Funding.”

Here are some numbers: “While defense spending accounts for 19 percent of the federal budget, it would absorb 55 percent of $17 billion in total cuts.”

Isn’t it funny how, when it comes to defending America, the liberals are overcome by frugality? Get the details here:

http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/may/08/obama-budget-cuts-target-military-funding/

Looking for a silver lining in that? Here you go: Politicians and voters from both parties are staunchly opposed to huge defense cuts – and there will be a fierce resistance to any efforts to weaken America’s national defense.

You can bet the Conservative Party will be doing everything we can to mobilize New York voters against drastic defense cuts. Make sure to check in on our “Call to Action” each week here on the blog to see what you can do to help stop the liberals’ agenda.

And of course, have a great weekend.

Excellent article by Daniel Henninger in the WSJ on line edition that says in part: "Today Mr. Obama releases the details of his $3.5 trillion budget, his path to the same goal. Rather than drown as usual in this accounting morass, Republicans should contrast the Obama-Pelosi budget with the Reagan-Kemp philosophy of how a striving nation works, saves and invests." While we are blogging on what President Obama's plans are, please tell me he is kidding about enlisting Congressman Rangle's help in cracking down on tax havens! Almost every day the president amazes me with his inexperience in making good choices. http://www.nypost.com/seven/05072009/postopinion/opedcolumnists/nys_artful_dodger_168004.htm

"Would you want to go into court to appear before a judge with "empathy" for groups A, B and C, if you were a member of groups X, Y or Z? Nothing could be further from the rule of law. Weekly Wrapup

We end the week on a sad note. John Marchi, who was the Conservative Party's mayoral candidate in 1969, passed away last week, at the age of 87. He will be remembered as NYC's finest and most beloved Republican State Senator of our generation.

This web page from the Staten Island Advance includes pictures and video.
http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2009/04/staten_island_remembers_state.html

Sen. Marchi earned admiration and respect from across the political spectrum. According to this Advance story, “The death of former State Sen. John Marchi of Staten Island at age 87 has brought tributes to him from a variety of prominent figures.”
http://www.silive.com/news/index.ssf/2009/04/john_marchi_is_hailed_by_notab.html

The New York Daily News also has a good article, which notes: “Marchi, a World War II veteran first elected to the Senate in 1957, was one of the nation's longest-serving elected officials when he retired in 2006.”

The leadership and character exemplified by Sen. Marchi are rare commodities these days.

Did we see it in the Obama Administration’s reckless Air Force One “photo op” that practically recreated 9/11 and literally terrified many New Yorkers?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/04282009/news/regionalnews/air_heads_in_dc_terrorize_city_166544.htm

Did we see it in Vice-President Joe Biden’s fear-mongering in the swine flu panic – or in the Obama Administration’s Orwellian “what he meant to say” backtracking?
http://www.nypost.com/seven/05012009/news/nationalnews/frightened_flu_fool_veep_urges_kin_to_av_167084.htm

Did we see it in the Democrats’ decision to use (make that abuse) “budget reconciliation” as a means of limiting debate and ramming through socialized health care?
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124078888721857543.html

Will we see it when the Democrats and their media allies begin their push for President Obama’s first Supreme Court nominee?
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,518561,00.html

Not at all. Principled leaders are few and far between here in New York or in Washington.

One that comes to mind: Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, who will head north to be our special guest speaker at the Conservative Party’s 47th Anniversary Dinner on May 28th in New York City.

Sen. DeMint is leading the conservative revolt against socialized health care, left-wing activist judges and out-of-control taxes and spending. He gives all of us hope.
