Weekly Wrap-Up

Here are some of the stories we’ll be talking about at our 43rd Annual Conservative Party Political Action Conference (CPPAC), which starts Sunday at noon in Albany.

The Conservative Party has been leading the push to keep terrorist trials out of New York, and it seems our work might be paying off. Word is that President Obama is now looking for other venues. This is another example of how we can make a difference when we speak out for what’s right.

That’s good news, but the more we learn about the Obama Administration’s handling of the Christmas Day bombing attempt, the more we realize that this President is dangerously off-course when it comes to America’s security. Charles Krauthammer has a good take on this.

More reaction to President Obama’s State of the Union Address...

George Will looks at what the President did NOT say...Rich Lowry reacts with a resounding “not true”...Mona Charen describes the spectacle as “Carteresque.”

What do you think? Cast your vote today in our new weekly poll.

Also be sure to check out these recent works and appearances by some of our CPPAC speakers...

Conservative activist David Bossie brought the case that resulted in last week’s Supreme Court ruling for political speech and the First Amendment. He’s getting plenty of coverage – everywhere from National Review and Fox News to the Washington Post and The New York Times.

Here’s our featured luncheon speaker, Judge Andrew Napolitano, discussing President Obama’s false claims about the Citizens United ruling.

We’ll also be hearing from a number of conservative activists, strategists and political leaders. We’re looking forward to a great weekend. I hope you are too!

Well no pivot or pirouette, just the same President Obama. A short fact check of his State of the Union. The WSJ thought it was the same agenda in more humble clothes. (I must have missed the humble clothes.) The NY Post thinks he is sensing public frustration but wants to know why he isn't doing anything to address it. (The President thinks he is, he fells our pain, sound familar?)

No lesson learned as today they raised the debt limit AGAIN.

Now this would be an interesting race.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Well tonight is the night. Will President Obama pivot and pirouette or will he just say the words he believes Americans want to hear? Sounds to me that he will be in campaign mode, selling the same goods that worked last November. Hope lies in the fact that we are a much wiser nation after his first year in office.

"What was that Mr. President, you didn't sign off on what?"

AG Eric Holder did this on his own? If so, he should be fired immediately.

Senator Schumer, STOP wasting our money! New Yorkers, isn't it time for a real change?

Governor Paterson, Senators and State Assemblymen, here is $55 million for you to collect and if they paid the other cigarette taxes they owe, you would have even more to close the deficit.

Sorry about being a day late posting Thomas Sowell.

We will need your help on this. It is a very dangerous proposal and should be stopped. Just look at the problems in California since they legalized "medical" marihuana. We will issue an "Memo in Opposition" early next week.

Monday, January 25, 2010

Steve Malanga sheds some light on NYC's high unemployment rate.

Michael Goodwin writes what many are thinking. Most would not vote for him again.

Apparently the President is hard of hearing and is stuck in the past, proven by his rehiring old friends.

The V-P's son says "no" to US Senate race.

Pete DuPont writes of an "economic time bomb"

Will southern California's water problem become all of ours?

Weekly Wrap-Up

Let’s end this week with a look at some numbers...

52% – Scott Brown’s share of the vote in his upset victory over Martha Coakley in the Massachusetts special election to replace Ted Kennedy.

0 – the number of future conservative victories guaranteed by the Scott Brown win in Massachusetts. We won that battle, and it was a huge battle – but the fight continues, and conservatives have to work even harder to make sure people are informed on the issues and energized to take a stand for America.

Will our Philosopher-King President actually listen to the people?

$1.9 trillionthe increase in the U.S. debt limit being sought by the Democrats in Washington. That would allow our nation’s debt to hit $14 trillion. Seems like the big spenders in Congress still don’t get that most Americans are fed up with all this spending.

$1 billion – that’s the cost of the tax increases packed into Gov. Paterson’s new budget.

In “Grading the Gov’s Budget,” E.J. McMahon of the Manhattan Institute gives the Paterson plan a solid C, describing it as “not nearly as tough as his rhetoric (or the headlines) would imply...[but] relatively restrained and almost fiscally conservative -- by Albany's low standards, that is.” What’s your grade for the Paterson budget? Give your opinion in this week’s poll.

5 – the number of Supreme Court justices who voted to expand free speech by repealing campaign finance restrictions.

Terrified of free speech and open debate? Don’t worry, New York’s very own philosopher-king Chuck Schumer is looking out for you! (Oh, and you’re un-American, too, according to the Democrats.)

Not enoughthe number of votes Speaker Nancy Pelosi has for the Senate version of ObamaCare... meaning that the President’s hostile takeover of our health care has almost zero chance of actually being enacted this year.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Congratulations to Citizens United! Thank you for standing up for the First Amendment. You can thank David N. Bossie in person at our 43rd Annual Conference at the end of this month.

More good news here, sorry Madam Speaker. The Founding Fathers knew what they were doing when they wrote the U.S. Constitution and gave the power to the people.

While health care reform is in serious trouble, obviously, it is not the only lesson Congress has to learn, they must stop the spending, and absolutely stop increasing the debt limit!

Where is the money coming from for this?

To Fred Barnes and Michael Barone: As much as this country needs him to change, it is not his personality. Juan Williams was right on Tuesday night when he said he would "double-down".

Mr. President, if you are serious about helping the economy, this is not the way to do it. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank and Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd also joined Mr. Obama at Thursday's White House event and if we look back they were all part of the collapse!

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

The right message at the right time by the right person. Congratulations, Scott Brown. As long as you remember who voted you in, you will be continue to be a Senator from Massachusetts in the People's Seat.

Time will tell if the President is being honest or just telling us what we need to hear. We sincerely hope that he is being honest.

However, there are some lingering doubts. We won't know for sure for quite some time as his adviser's may not agree with him. Southers makes right choice. Nina Easton writes of "A limit to Compassion."

Legislators declare the Governor's budget "dead" for all the wrong reasons. "Medical" marijuana in the news again after New Jersey's outgoing Governor signs bill into law. See Chairman Long's quote in article.

Part two of Thomas Sowell's article "Are Republicans Due" here.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

As much as I love New York, I would rather be a voter in Massachusettes today, wouldn't you?

E. J. McMahon writes of the school aid crisis. (Sunday's Newsday article) Also from the weekend, Chairman Mike Long, criticizes the health care sweetheart deal for unions.

Robert B. Ward writes of NY's budget problems.

"If the biggest fiscal crisis in a generation isn't enough to spur Albany, it's hard to know what would. Yet just two weeks ago, Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, who oversees public authorities, seemed worried that Walder's plans might annoy the unions." Read more of Nicole Gelinas' column here.

Richard Cohen really does have a sense of humor.

"The stakes in this fall's elections go far beyond the fate of either the Republican party or the Democratic party. The fate of America is on the line. (emphasis added by cpnys) The Republicans need to understand that-- and to understand that they are not simply "due" because of polls." Thomas Sowell understands.

Weekly Wrap-Up

So who’s had a good week?

Not Harold Ford Jr. His campaign against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is not off to a good start. Actually, his interview with The New York Times might be considered a good end to his brief campaign, as it is frequently hilarious – whether he’s assuring us he does not shoot children, or talking about his helicopter visit to Staten Island.

The full interview is here – or, if you like, here is a pretty fair overview of the debacle.

According to The Heritage Foundation, this has been a good week for Big Labor.

Sen. Harry Reid had a surprisingly good week. His bizarre racial comments about then-candidate Barack Obama would have been enough to get a conservative Capitol Hill intern fired – but because Reid is a liberal Democrat he's getting a free ride from the media.

As far as Washington is concerned, Harry Reid can do or say whatever he wants, with no consequences or accountability. But will Nevada’s voters give him a pass? Maybe not.

It’s been a bad week for Gov. David Paterson – but hey, what else is new? The Paterson Problem of the Week is underwhelming fundraising numbers to go with his tepid approval ratings.

It was a good week for Sarah Palin, who we learned is the newest Fox News contributor – which makes this a bad week for the liberals who have let themselves be driven crazy by this smart, independent conservative woman. Or maybe it was a good week for the anti-Palin crowd? You get the feeling they like hating conservatives.

Washington, DC is ending the week on a sour note.

According to this report, “The Obama administration is considering a criminal trial in Washington for the Guantanamo Bay detainee suspected of masterminding the bombing of a Bali nightclub that killed 202 people, a plan that would bring one of the world's most notorious terrorism suspects just steps from the U.S. Capitol.”

What do you think – should we be welcoming trained terrorists to the cities hit hardest on 9/11? Take our Weekly Poll to give your opinion.

Have a great weekend!

Despite poll numbers, President Obama seems determined to pass health care reform without regard for what the American people want. Is it just plain arrogance or just bait and switch?

Jobless claims up. Foreclosures up. The President responds by taxing banks.

If all else fails, just change the numbers.

The NY Post is justifyably angry regarding the clubbing of our SEALS (Have you signed the petition on our website www.cpnys.org?)

Michael Barone writes about the "educated class" and the rest of Americans.

And from Massachusettes, Howie Carr, writes of a Mass Miracle? All of America needs a Mass Miracle right now, it may be the only way to stop the totally out of control spending taking place, so do what you can for Scott Brown.

Have you been watching Fox News in the AM? Judge Andrew Napolitano is doing a series on "The Constitution and Freedom" and the final piece will be tomorrow. Well worth watching. Are you aware that the very same, Judge Andrew Napolitano, is our featured speaker at the 43rd Annual Conference? Come hear him in person at the Albany Holiday Inn on Wolf Road. See our website for details and registration forms.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Phyllis Schafly writes of the marriage penalty in the health care bill.

Will New York's research in stem cells produce the same failure as California?

The Heritage Foundation isn't pleased with Speaker Pelosi.

Read Chairman Long's on-line interview regarding the 23CD.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

We have blogged about absurd things in the past, however, this one takes the cake. If this is what our State Department is pondering, no wonder we are at risk.

First we bail them out, then we tax them. Mr. President, let the free market work. May we also remind you that government does not create jobs, you and Congress may think you can, but history proves government does not. Your spending is the problem; companies will not hire as long as you continue to tax businesses excessively and eliminate any hope of a profit.

Apparently, the only thing President Obama really wants to do is to spend more.

New Jersey passes "medical marihuana", (read the comments) the New York Assembly has passed a bill in previous years, our question becomes: Will this be next? There is nothing medicinal about marihuana.

Senator Chuck Schumer vunerable? John Faso (a speaker at our upcoming conference) thinks he may be.

It's Thomas Sowell Tuesday!

Monday, January 11, 2010

Something really has to be done about the attitude some elected officials have. And the "perks" they seem to get.

Michael Mulgrew is fighting for the wrong ideas.

Talk about wrong ideas, what is the Governor thinking? Does he really want to fund more terrorist by increasing the cigarette tax?

The NY Post editorial states that terrorist belong at GITMO -- not in court. Have you signed the petition on our website yet? Please do so before you forget.

Michael Goodwin wants to know "Where's Obama"?

Austin Hill has an interesting article on "Big Sis"

The voting public has spoken, why do they continue to undermine what the public wants?

ENOUGH of the Nanny State!

This is really scary, if you only have time for one article today, you must read this one.

A way to prevent the above from happening....If you know people in Massachusetts, tell them to be a part of history, they can start saving America by voting for Scott Brown. Encourage everyone you can to take a stand for America.... to help in anyway they can. A vote for Scott Brown is a vote to end the outrageous changes taking place in our nation.

Weekly Wrap Up

Thoughts at the end of the first week of 2010...

No more praise for Gov. Paterson for talking about the need to rein in spending. It’s just talk – and it rings especially hollow when that talk is followed by calls for task forces and “investments” in new government programs... i.e. more talking and more spending.

But hey, according to Gov. Paterson himself, we’re not supposed to keep track of what he actually accomplishes. What he says is more important, the Governor has announced.

What was Gov. Paterson's job before he became Lt. Governor and then Governor? Oh, right, he was in the State Senate... Senate Minority Leader, actually. So when he talks about all the problems that state legislature has caused, let’s not forget that for quite some time he was part of that problem.

All the intelligence that was missed or misinterpreted before the Ft. Hood shootings and the Christmas Day bombing attempt... and the Obama Administration expects New Yorkers to believe that we’ll be safe with a terrorist on trial here in our state?

New jobless figures out today show that President Obama can’t be trusted with America’s economic security either. How can any business be hiring new workers or expanding operations when new health care costs and regulations and higher taxes are on the horizon?

The Democrats are ringing in the new year with a new marriage penalty. Their health care “reforms” just keep getting worse and worse.

According to Stephen Moore in The Wall Street Journal, this is not shaping up to be a good year for taxpayers, unless you happen to die.

Another day, another defeat for gay marriage – this time in New Jersey.

Looks like health care is your pick for the biggest story of 2009. This is a story that’s not going anywhere. It’s close to passage, but ObamaCare is not quite a done deal yet. And if it does pass – Americans are not going to be happy when they learn the details of the taxes and spending hidden in this bill... which means politicians up for reelection this year might not be feeling so great.

In our poll about the biggest story of 2009, Gov. Paterson got zero votes. He might want to get used to not getting too many votes this year.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Please sign the petition from Human Events and Red State Blog to move the KSM Trail from NY City. (BTW, Eric Erickson [Red State Blog] will be a speaker at our annual conference in Albany on January 31 - February 1, 2010. Registration forms will be posted on our website, over the weekend.)

Conservatives finish 2009 as Number 1 Ideological Group. This may be news to the media, but not to us....

The NY Post Editorial wants to know "Can David deliver?" Well considering that the first 5 minutes of the State of the State were concerned about spending and the next 40 minutes were all about spending, the question really is: What does he really WANT to deliver? The spending or the cap on spending. (If anyone truly thinks it is the cap on spending, we have a few bridges to sell you)

Charter Schools get another "A"

Americans still need the truth about ACORN and President Obama.

The Democrat and Chronicle.com calls for citizens to make a difference this year.

Drudge is reporting that C-Span will be "allowed one hour of coverage". An hour?? Are they kidding? Eight times you promise the American people and open and honest bi-partisan debate on health care and one hour is what C-Span is granted. I can't help but wonder if that is the hour that the ACORN representatives will be at lunch!

With regard to the health care bill, is the federal government penalizing couples that marry?

Federal spending is up how much?

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Is there trouble in paradise?

First phantom congressional districts, now phantom zip codes.

Betsy McCaughey lays out the case that Obamacare is unconstitutional, perhaps that is why the Dems want closed door negotiations.

Well, President Obama, where is the promised televised health care debates? And what will your opinion on GITMO detainees going to Yemen be tomorrow?

Guess the heat is too hot in the kitchen for Senator Dodd.

CPPAC makes the Daily News Blog Watch for more news on CPPAC here and on our website.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Three Cheers for C-Span! Where are the open deliberations on the Health Care Reform Bill for final passage? Hiding behind closed doors?

Nancy Pelosi should remember her promise to us.

NY Post Editorial writes of ACORN's City Hall Branch.

Op-Ed by E. J. McMahon on how NY can save itself from fiscal failure.

Heather MacDonald writes about a crime theory demolished.

It must be Tuesday, Thomas Sowell has another great article!

Monday, January 4, 2010

Need a blueprint for the New York State Budget? E. J. McMahon and Josh Barro have written a comprehensive strategy for saving $30 billion. Read it here. Please remember that Mr. McMahon is a speaker at our annual CPPAC in Albany at the end of this month. Registration forms will be available on our website later this week.

If it is okay for Speaker Silver, it must be okay for Senate Leader John Sampson. Guess the Trial Lawyers own Albany and Washington now. Where are the "good government groups" when needed?

Where is global warming when you need it?

Isn't this the man you want to head the TSA?

Fannie and Freddie taking even more from you.

Daniel Henninger writes about the worst decade in the last 50 years and the best. Do you agree with his analysis?

Charles Krauthammer, Michael Barone and Michele Malkin all worth the read.
