The big news this week here in New York is the on-time budget.

That is a step in the right direction – especially since the new budget adheres to the Conservative Party’s calls for spending restraint and fiscal responsibility. But there’s plenty of work that still needs to be done.

A top priority now must be mandate relief – lifting costly mandates on local governments. This is essential to getting taxes under control and easing the burden on New York taxpayers.

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks explains the need for this reform – the sooner the better.

Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos is also highlighting the need for mandate relief (and The New York Post offers comic relief with the clever headline)...

Mandate relief, as explained in a Post article earlier this month, would “unshackle cities, towns, counties and school districts from costly state-imposed requirements” and is essential to “giving local governments the flexibility to spend their money as they see best.”
