Weekly Wrap Up

For the most part, the news was not good for New Yorkers this week.

But if your name is Congressman Charlie Rangel, you were happy to learn that your ethics hearings will not take place until November 15. Mr. Rangel supposedly wanted them before the election, but I believe he may be secretly happy that they will not begin until after the elections.

Conservative Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe DioGuardi has a good profile here and according to recent polls his race could be a lot closer than Senator Gillibrand would like. Debates between the two will be on October 15 and October 21.

Speaking of debates, Carl Paladino will debate Andrew Cuomo and all of the other candidates on October 18 at Hofstra University.

Government spending at the federal level increased by 9% in fiscal 2010. Certainly not good news for all of us. And couple that news with the news, according to Gallup that the real unemployment numbers are at 10.1% for the month of September; leaving 61 % of people believing that the country is not moving in the right direction. For New Yorkers the news was even more depressing. For the first time in 70 years, (since the real depression), citizens’ income has declined. In 2009 alone, personal income dropped by 6.8%, which, according to the article, impacts every other aspect of our lives. Unfortunately, New York’s elected officials have caused many of the problems by their out of control spending.

The grim report indicates NY citizens experienced a sharp decline in their income. Job growth is weak and the future of New Yorkers is at its lowest peak in decades. This week’s poll question wants to know if our elected officials have learned anything from their grave mistakes. If you don’t think they have, you will be able to make your voice heard loud and clear on November 2.

The beautiful fall weather, with the leaves almost at peak, will give us a slight reprieve from the bad news all over the newspapers this week. Enjoy the weekend!
