Weekly Wrap-Up

Some bad news this week for Gov. Paterson and the left, and unfortunately for our entire state... but there's a silver lining or two...

According to Newsday (http://tinyurl.com/psjaxz
):

“Voters continue to give Gov. David A. Paterson record-low approval ratings...” Just 18% of registered voters have a positive opinion of Gov. Paterson – while a whopping 81% have a negative opinion.

This week The Buffalo News featured an upstate family that’s voting with their feet. They’ve crunched the numbers and realized that New York is not a friendly place to do business (http://tinyurl.com/r75uuy)
:

“The Bells might just be the poster family for the upstate population flight. They desperately wanted to keep their business and its jobs in Buffalo but, in the end, were left with no choice but to move.”

Unfortunately, the Bells aren’t alone. The policies being pushed by Gov. Paterson and his allies in Albany are giving many New Yorkers a negative opinion of living here. As The Buffalo News reports (http://tinyurl.com/qllxt3):

Nearly a quarter of the state's population is at least giving thought to leaving New York for better conditions elsewhere, a new poll has found.

This poll also shows that more than half of New Yorkers “believe the state is moving in the wrong direction.”

Count me in that majority – but you can bet the Conservative Party’s not going anywhere. It’s our job to give people a reason to stay here – to fight for lower taxes and less spending, and to elect candidates who support those policies... so that New York’s taxpayers can once again feel like their representatives aren’t out to destroy them.

This won’t be an easy job, to say the least – but there are a few bright spots for us. That same poll that shows Gov. Paterson in so much trouble also shows eroding support for the Governor’s pet project, gay marriage. Just goes to show that the more we talk about this issue, the more people turn against the idea of radically redefining marriage.

Want more proof that our ideas are the right ideas? Gov. Paterson is trying to save his skin by taking up the Conservative Party mantra that spending is the problem. According to Newsday (http://tinyurl.com/rb6l3g):

“New York Gov. David Paterson told legislative leaders Wednesday that if they won't consider his plan to cap Albany's notorious overspending, then he'll impose the cap himself.”

Gov. Paterson claims he’ll impose that cap through his veto power – this would give Republicans in Albany a chance to redeem themselves by stopping any veto override.

This all sounds promising, but I’m not holding my breath. How many times have we been shown that Gov. Paterson is all talk when it comes to reining in spending? Fortunately the Conservative Party can keep doing what we do best – making the case for smaller government that doesn’t waste your money.

Here’s a scary headline (http://tinyurl.com/m5kaqy):

“Gov. Paterson questions management of first-place Mets.”

Please, please keep this man away from anything that’s going well in New York.

And please, have a great weekend!
