Weekly Wrap Up

Did you hear about the woman in Ohio who entered a clothing store, announced she’d won the lottery and promised to pay for everyone’s purchases? When customers realized this was too good to be true, a riot broke out.

This lady will probably be in jail for perpetrating this hoax, but is that really fair? Think about it: She claimed that money is no object... she promised the world for free... she was exposed as a liar. Sounds like she belongs in Congress. She’d fit right in.

And as it happens, the politicians in Washington have offered us plenty of hoaxes and too-good-to-be-true spectacles this week.

New York’s senators have been beside themselves trying to convince us that the liberals’ health care “reform” won’t bust the budget. Talk about a hoax. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has let it slip that the true cost of ObamaCare will be something like $2 trillion.

And where else but Washington do people who think saving $54 billion a year is no big deal?

I wish that was the only hoax being orchestrated by the health care crusaders.

Truth is, health care “reform” is in fact a costly expansion of the welfare state. According to The Heritage Foundation, of the 29 million people being promised new insurance coverage, “almost half (14 million) will get their coverage through... welfare programs.”

In other words, Heritage reports, “for half of those Americans who are being promised health reform, they are going to be stunned to find themselves in a welfare office applying for Medicaid.” Get all the details here:

We saw this week that when you hear about Congress “supporting the troops” and spending America’s defense dollars, there’s a good chance that the joke is on us.

The Washington Times reports, “Senators diverted $2.6 billion in funds in a defense spending bill to pet projects largely at the expense of accounts that pay for fuel, ammunition and training for U.S. troops, including those fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an analysis.”

Among these pork barrel “earmarks” – “$20 million to launch an educational institute named after the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.” I’m sure that will come in handy for the troops.

Here at home, Gov. Paterson is actually taking a stand for fiscal restraint and less spending. The next couple of weeks will tell how sincere he really is – and how much the politicians in Albany will go along with his plans.

What do you think? Is this an honest effort or just a joke? Cast your vote in this week’s poll.

To find the greatest hoax going on right now in New York, we travel to the 23rd Congressional District. The Republican establishment must have been joking when they selected Dede Scozzafava as their candidate. More and more voters are thinking it’s not so funny...

According to analysis of this latest poll, “Hoffman, picking up seven points, has narrowed the gap between first and third place significantly. With just 10 points separating the three candidates, this is likely to be a very tight – and fiercely fought – campaign right through Election Day, now less than three weeks away.”

More good news: “While voters give a small edge to Owens on virtually all of the issues, it is particularly interesting to note that it is Hoffman who has picked up the most support on every issue over the last two weeks.”

The Conservative Party and principled Republicans will be working hard over the next three weeks to introduce more voters to Doug Hoffman, and show why he is the best choice to represent this district. This race is no laughing matter.

Have a great weekend.
