The news of the day is certainly about President Obama's selection for Supreme Court Justice, current federal circuit court judge Sonia Sotomayor. The left is elated and the right is concerned, certainly not because of what her life's struggle has taught her, rather her own comments.
"In a speech published in the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal in 2002, Judge Sotomayor offered her own interpretation of this jurisprudence. "Justice [Sandra Day] O'Connor has often been cited as saying that a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases," she declared. "I am . . . not so sure that I agree with the statement. First, . . . there can never be a universal definition of wise. Second, I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Read more here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124338457658756731.html. It seems to me that Judge Sotomayor has forgetten a simple piece of history...it was white males who wrote the document that gave her the opportunities she was able to make the most of. If she had been born in Iraq, for that matter if President Obama was born in Iraq, would they have achieved half as much as they have?
The Wall Street Journal on line edition has a column "Questions for Sotomayer" http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124338359957256605.html, certainly worth the read.
Thomas Sowell has a column http://townhall.com/Columnists/ThomasSowell/2009/05/27/sotomayor__empathy_in_action and so does Rich Lowry http://www.nypost.com/seven/05272009/postopinion/opedcolumnists/beyond_the_law_171079.htm
also good reading.
The New York Post believes there may be a silver lining in her nomination http://www.nypost.com/seven/05272009/postopinion/editorials/sotomayor_to_the_court_171095.htm
Kudos's to Bill Hammond for his article on the scary and dangerous ramifications of a new state law that takes effect in less than two weeks. http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/columnists/hammond/index.html
Will Sen. Schneiderman be so cavalier if he is directly effected by his legislation? Or will he then understand our concerns?
