The understandable euphoria over the death of Osama bin Laden is easing up – so now we can take a more measured view of what it means and what the situation says about the Obama Administration.
The always insightful Charles Krauthammer notes – and I agree – that “the bin Laden operation is the perfect vindication of the war on terror.”
Via the Weekly Standard, here is Mark Halperin’s interesting take on “The Five Mistakes the Obama Administration Has Made in the Aftermath of the Bin Laden Killing.”Halperin says that one Obama Administration mistake is letting the debate over America’s future in Afghanistan get out of control, and notes that this allows “those pressing for an end of the war to use bin Laden's death as rhetorical leverage.”
And indeed, the newest issue of the Democrats’ favorite magazine, The Nation, blasts this on the cover: “Bin Laden is Dead: Now, Let’s Get Out of Afghanistan and End the War on Terror.”
Self-proclaimed “hawk” Larry Kudlow is taking a more measured approach, saying that now is the time to take a serious look at America’s role in Afghanistan and the next steps – not the end – for the War on Terror. And Sen. Joe Lieberman and other members of Congress are warning against any dramatic decisions about Afghanistan based solely on the death of Osama bin Laden.
What do you think? Should we immediately end operations in Afghanistan, as the “progressive” Democrats are demanding? Should we stay the course? Or, is there a middle ground?Give your opinion in our new Weekly Poll.
Even something as dramatic as the death of one of America’s greatest enemies can’t change some things for President Obama: Unemployment is still rampant...
... and gas prices are still too high – though there is hope for long-term and short-term relief. All this means that despite the success of the Osama bin Laden operation, public opinion on President Obama’s handling of the economy is at an all time low.
Here in New York – thanks to the Conservative Party and other pro-taxpayer groups – there is hope for a property tax cap.Have a great weekend!
