The Weekly Standard Blog writes that "more than 100 university professors, journalists, and think tank scholars signed a letter that explains why Obama's "accommodation" is nothing more than a "cheap accounting trick" and what soon to be Cardinal Dolan thinks of it.

One of NY's up and coming Representatives in Congress, Ann Marie Buerkle, was a featured speaker at CPAC and in this clip explains some of the problems of living in NY.

More borrowing by state and local government will be allowed if the Governor's budget passes as is according to this article. The Governor's office protest too much for it not to be true.

Some NY Lawmakers understand the risk of raising the minimum wage in New York.

If this passes, and it certainly should not, look for more people to leave New York. We can not afford any more pension benefits!

Let's hope everyone understands the problems with the Judges' ruling and can reach a reasonable settlement on when/how many primaries will take place in New York. More here.

Greetings from CPAC! We're in Washington for this annual conservative conference, and it's an exciting place to be.

People I've talked to are concerned about the GOP primary, for sure – and of course, everyone is waiting to hear what Mitt Romney has to say today – but there's a lot of optimism here that we can beat Obama in November.

The Washington Times has special CPAC coverage that's updated frequently.

So far at CPAC, we've heard from Sens. Jim DeMint and Marco Rubio, and former candidates Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry.

A big topic up for discussion here at CPAC this weekend is President Obama’s trampling of religious freedom with his ObamaCare contraception mandates.

Here are two takes on the issue this morning: Representatives of three faiths writing in The Wall Street Journal, and some blistering analysis from Charles Krauthammer.

We’re hearing reports now that the Obama Administration is ready to compromise on this with some “accommodation” for religious groups – but if you ask me, religious liberty is NOT something to be “accommodated,” it’s something that must be respected, first and foremost.

Isn't it reassuring to know that President Obama believes he is "getting better as time goes on" and that he deserves a second term. Wow, he deserves a second term, interesting choice of words. The fact that he has spent more in the last 3 years than all previous Presidents, is just cause to end his term immediately, can you imagine what he will spend if reelected? Americans deserve more than a President who bashes what Congress has accomplished this past year by simply slowing down his spending. Obama complains that he can't get anything done with the current Congress, and we say Thank YOU to those who have tried to save America with tiny steps. Mr. President, in my opinion, what you deserve is retirement and America deserves a president who understands the core values and beliefs that makes America the greatest nation in the world. One more thought regarding your interview with NBC...you think one of the toughest parts of being president is that your wife was dragged into the "political realm".....Hmm, guess you really do not understand marriage either.

President Ronald Reagan, would never have said he deserved to be President, he understood the privilege of severing his fellow Americans and never took it for granted. Happy Birthday 101st birthday, your legacy lives on.

One of the consequences of presidential elections in the United States is Americans have to live for years with the judicial appointments made by Presidents; some are good choices, some horrendous as they try to change our Constitution from the bench. Save this article and reread it in November before you vote. Save this one also and be very certain that your vote will help shape the future of America. The stunning statement by Justice Ginsburgh reminds us of how serious elections are. We, the people, control our destiny...will we become a nation that embraces Sharia Law or stand firm for our Constitution?

The New York Post calls out our "Pastor-in-Chief" Barack Obama on his shameful exploitation of Christianity in pushing for higher taxes.

This at a time when Obama has effectively declared war on religious freedom.

The Post also takes on the Associated Press and their overwrought coverage of the NYPD’s efforts to protect us from terrorism.

John Podhoretz has some caring campaign advice for Mitt Romney, i.e. “Think before you talk.”

Some good news on the economy – but also plenty of analysis showing why everything’s not 100% rosy.

This clip from CNBC explores how the participation rate – people dropping out of the job market altogether – affects these unemployment numbers.

The Washington Times also digs deeper into the numbers. And The Heritage Foundation makes a key point: "In reality, the economy is recovering despite — not because of — Obama’s policies."

This decline in unemployment is being heralded by some – especially political allies of Barack Obama – as a sign that the economy surging back into full recovery... but numbers only matter so much. What about the real world? Are you seeing signs of economic recovery in your area?

Hypocritical . President Obama is a hypocrite. His remarks this morning (at the National Prayer Breakfast), that he pushed Obamacare and Dodd-Frank because of Christ, is the most hypocritical statement I have ever heard. How can a person who states that he pushed Obamacare because of Christ insist that Catholic and other Religious Organizations must provide health care coverage for all FDA approved contraceptives to their employees? The man is a hypocrite or worse, he is the 21st century Joe Boyd.

Unfortunately, my Church did not read this to the parishioners last Sunday. Hopefully yours did.

Fortunately, we have leaders like Sen. Marco Rubio, who understand the importance of ending abortion in the United States of America.

The New York Post Editorial has some concerns (as we certainly do) on the Governor's proposal to build a convention center at Aqueduct Raceway, especially regarding his support for Casino Gambling in New York State, which we continue to oppose. The NY Post states "But the public needs to know fully just what’s being contemplated — and what New Yorkers will be asked to give up." That statement is one that we certainly support. If New Yorkers are going to vote to amend the State Constitution, they must know the specifics of any proposal.

We also agree with Sen. Skelos on the the proposed minimum wage bill. Speaker Silver is obviously only reading left wing propaganda again while he stalls on helping New Yorkers be safe and possibly exonerated.

This is a double whammy cost to taxpayers.

Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more of this type of behavior in society. The decline of morals and values is appalling, while we certainly do not think more laws will resolve the decline, it is evident that society must reacquaint ourselves with the moral compass that our Founding Fathers understood.

It is pathetic that Congress has to even consider passing this.

The Left is up in arms over this. It is amazing that the Left/Progressives are saying that Korman gave into bullying.....how much has the Left gained by bullying???

Seriously, does anyone believe the DNC spokesman?

Now this is newsworthy: Manhattan DA Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., has an opinion piece in today's NY Times that agrees with a position the Conservative Party has supported for years!

Speaker Sheldon Silver supports a legislative pay raise, but the NY Post believes the Speaker should win the prize for gall for suggesting they deserve a raise. Going without a raise since 1999 is a long time, however, every two years they make the choice to run again, the pay can't be all that bad, they do get reimbursed for each day in Albany and get stipends for leadership roles and heading committees. Not bad pay for what is supposed to be a part time job.

Yesterday marked the day that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Roe v Wade, one of the most contentious rulings ever decided by the Court, and one that this Party would like to see overturned. As science progresses, and women see their child through sonograms, we believe their hearts will change, even if the Court does not. President Obama is completely wrong, nowhere in the U. S. Constitution are you granted the right to end the life of a completely innocent baby. I challenge President Obama to show me where that right is guaranteed. When our Founding Fathers declared our independence, they understood the value of life as they declared: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Looks like the honeymoon is over between Governor Cuomo and Speaker Silver. The NY Post Editorial page is not a fan of AQE and neither are we. More on the simmering story from NY1.

The headline says Agency Cuts, but the article says spending continues. Note in the article, it states the request was made, but it is not a hard order.

The Triborough Amendment may not be eliminated this year according to this article, but it has a lot of organizations, including the Conservative Party, that support its repeal.

After his unprecedented power grab this week, the Washington Examiner has an idea, noting that the President’s end-run around the Constitution is “the same sort of fundamental disrespect for the rule of law that is routinely practiced by tinhorn dictators like Hugo Chavez.”

In Human Events, we learn that as far as the Senate concerns, this means war.

The Heritage Foundation on Obama's Tyrannical Abuse of Power. This is a must read article on Obama's "utter disregard" of our U.S. Constitution. More on Obama's appointment from the NY Times, the Washington Times , Human Events the Wall Street Journal, The Hill and the NY Post. The arrogance of making this appointment will certainly become a key issue this year since the language of the bill is quite specific and many in Congress would be happy if the Dodd-Frank Bill was repealed.

The Administration dropped some news over the past week when most people were focused on family and the Holidays. Obama to ask for debt limit hike, again. A few other items to be aware of, according to the Heritage Foundation, the Justice Department condones perjury, again,
and AG Eric Holder does not like voter ID laws.

In NYC Bill de Blassio wants to stifle job creation.

But this is a new year and the Heritage Foundation and Human Events give us a preview of the coming year. The Heritage Foundation even has 2012 resolutions for Conservatives.

Senator Harry Reid should make a resolution to stick to the truth.

President Obama must remember there is a paper trail now for voters to judge him on.

And Governor Andrew Cuomo has to learn that people will not trust him if he continues to break his promises to constituents. Some good advice in today NY Post Editorial for the Governor.

True to form, Columbia University is offering class credit for the "occupiers", what next? Class credit for misdemeanor convictions? Look what the 'occupiers" are doing now. I really wish someone would explain to me the reason why they don't put their energy into positive actions? I am all for capitalism, however, when capitalism sets up a system to possibly defraud taxpayers, it needs to be examined. The Wall Street Journal investigates a law firm that specializes in Social Security Disability benefits and the business model used to create a company that collected $88 million in fees for helping people through the system. A safety net is necessary for the truly disabled, but the rise of specialty firms to help people collect disability payments has put a severe strain of funds available.

The House Republicans continue to be savagely attacked for trying to stand up for principles. The fact remains that the payroll tax, while beneficial to constituents, leaves a gap in what is being paid into Social Security. By not dealing with how to make up the difference and knowing the strain about to begin with baby boomers at retirement age, the GOP House passed a Bill that included a way to do both, yet they are losing the public relations battle. What would you do? Let us know in this weeks’ poll question.

Kudos to Congressman Paul Ryan named Human Events Conservative of the Year. Larry Kudlow’s article articulates Congressman Ryan’s goals to prevent America from fiscal bankruptcy. There is only one problem; we need more people in Congress who share Ryan’s goals.

Leave it to the New York Times to praise the EPA’s new regulations to limit mercury emissions; they obviously are blind to these facts.

Isn’t it time for Attorney General Holder to understand a photo ID for voting is not about race? Most (70%) of Americans support the idea.

The Occupy Wall Street certainly does all it can to help the underprivileged. Here is an article from the LA Times that states the Mayor calls for budget cuts to cover the cost of the protests. Isn’t that a great way to help your cause?

The New York Post Editors spell out the consequences of taxing the rich and the incongruous outrage from the politicians who are unhappy about the results of their vote.

We’re posting this blog entry just as Sen. Chuck Schumer is launching a new effort to outlaw “false or misleading election material” that could stop people from voting.

Chuck and his cohorts promise that their bill is designed solely to prevent untrue statements about, for example, election dates or locations. But is it hard to imagine this bill being used to restrict ideas that Chuck & Co. find false or misleading?

Scary. Let’s hope this proposal remains just that.

So did you watch last night’s Iowa debate? If not – and even if you did, but want to see what people are saying - here is some post-debate analysis.

The Washington Times notes that Newt Gingrich “took fire from the other candidates,” while the New York Post also puts Newt at the center of attention during the debate.

John Podhoretz is not impressed with Newt’s performance.

The Weekly Standard calls this one “the nice debate.”

And Human Events sees no winners or losers in Iowa.

The Heritage Foundation has the question of the day: Why would Obama veto job creation? Is this how Obama negotiates? It really is time Obama put the people of this great country first and stop the class warfare campaigning to keep his job. Mr. President read this, I have hope you'll change your ways....and I'll be waiting for a long, long time because a leopard does not change his spots.

Can you believe this man was a U.S. Senator? I guess when you really you look at the bills he pushed no one is that shocked by what he said.

Please do not believe Senator Gillibrand's Bill in response to the Throw Them All Out book, will resolve the issue. It won't! According to this, it only makes it easier. Again, elected officials grabbing headlines trying to hoodwink you into believing they, and they alone, know what is best for us.

The Unemployment Insurance program has dispensed $16B to people who did not deserve the benefits in 2010 alone. Not much hope in getting any of it returned....yet Obama wants to extend the benefits.

Here we go again! With a NYC Council that cannot stop spending either, will Mayor Bloomberg keep his word on this? He certainly is capable of being bullied.

The airwaves and schools all decry the horrors of bulling. The Legislature passes bills that condemn anything that even hints at something that might be considered bullying. So what do our leaders do? They cave, they give into bullies! What a great lesson our children are learning from the "adults"... I will get what I want if I am a bully, but if I bully the wrong person or group, I'll be severely punished. Yes, of course this makes perfect sense .... to someone, but certainly not to me...or children who have a knack of understanding things that the political elite fail to see.

All legislators, at every level, should read this, maybe then they would have the courage to end out of control spending. They should also read this article.

Now who said that? I can’t remember...

Our Weekly Poll question last week asked if you thought Cuomo and the Albany establishment would raise taxes in 2012. Unfortunately we underestimated their money-grubbing abilities.

Fortunately Conservatives in the Assembly, including Minority Leader Brian Kolb, continue to speak out against the Cuomo politicians’ behind-closed-doors tax ambush.

As Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin has noted, this Cuomo “tax reduction” will equal out to about $30 in tax relief for many New York families. What will you do when faced with such an extraordinary windfall? Give your vote today in our new Weekly Poll.

Cuomo’s sudden alliance with the Occupy Wall Street-style class warriors (whose tax-and-spend zealotry has occupied Albany for quite some time now) reflects what’s going on in Washington – what Charles Krauthammer calls “Obama’s Campaign for Class Resentment.”

Where can one find these “one percenters” – joyriding in a Rolls Royce? Gunning for a hole-in-one on the golf course? No, just peek into Obama’s inner circle.

In the Washington Times Donald Lambro surveys the GOP presidential field that (for the next few minutes anyway) seems to be down to two.

The Times also reports on Mitt Romney’s increasingly aggressive pursuit of Newt Gingrich.

And via the Weekly Standard, we discover a new concept: the “Valentine’s Day Option” in which a new GOP contender could (theoretically) crash the race at the last minute.

Some articles on yesterday's tax increase which is still being reported as a reduction in taxes -- still trying to understand that logic when the state is getting an additional $2 billion -- here, here, here, and here. As Chairman Long points out in the first link, he sees the new tax plan as "following the European formula of failure," and laments the fact that no cuts in spending were made.

Governor Andrew Cuomo now " "The more you make the higher rate you pay. That I believe is fair." Governor Cuomo in January, 2011 ""The old way of solving the problem was continuing to raise taxes on people, and we just can't do that anymore. The working families of New York cannot afford tax increases. The answer is going to have to be that we're going to have to reduce government spending."

In politics, trust is everything. You have to be trusted to keep your word -- the words you used to be elected -- Governor Cuomo has broken that trust and he certainly isn't the only one. The Senate voted 55-0 for these taxes, justifying their votes with political spin. People are fed up with the broken promises and they are not likely to forgive the transgression because they have an extra $30 a month. Like Judas, they won't be able to undo what is done.

Good news from Washington for a change. Of course it would be better if it was totally repealed, but at least it won't be sold in the supermarket.

More of the typical bad news from Washington: Spending has not slowed down, 38 months of deficits.

It's obvious to me that President Obama really does not care about getting people back to work. Mr. President you cannot defend this decision, people need jobs.

The Wall Street Journal says: "Mr. Cuomo claimed to be different when he ran in 2010, but his resistance didn't even last a year in office. So two states are now taking one more whack at the people who create wealth, in order to redistribute more of it. For how that story ends, look to Europe." More from the Wall Street Journal here.

E. J. McMahon explains it is a tax increase!

From Assembly Republican Leader Brian Kolb: “From what has been reported in the media so far, the bottom line is that taxes are being raised in New York State and we are still not dealing with our state’s serious spending problem. There is still no significant unfunded mandate relief for local governments. We should be protecting taxpayers by capping local Medicaid costs, enacting a state spending cap and doing this through an open, public process where these issues are debated and discussed in the light of day, not through secret deals behind closed doors by three-men-in-a-room. Tax hikes have never been the answer for creating more private sector jobs and long-term prosperity for New Yorkers. That still holds true today.”

From Assemblyman Steve McLauglin: A family making $100,000 will see $400 more per year or $33.33 per month. Less than the cost of a tank of gas. You are being scammed if you believe this is a serious tax cut. None of the three have the guts or fortitude to address New York's out of control spending problem. I'd have more respect for them if they'd have kept the current tax structure. At least that structure would've raised the revenue needed to close the gap. They chose the smoke and mirrors route and a change that will not close the existing budget gap.

The reality is that the underlying problem --- too much spending, unfunded mandates on localities (unreasonable medicaid costs) pension benefits --- have not been resolved. The changes that Larry, Curly and Moe agreed to, do not resolve the problem, yet they have proven one thing: Their word means absolutely nothing. No matter how they sell it, taxes are going up to the tune of $2 billion dollars, money that could be used to create jobs.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is on the verge of betraying the New Yorkers who actually believed him when he said "You are kidding yourself if you think you can be one of the highest-taxed states in the nation, have a reputation for being anti-business -- and have a rosy economic future."

Governor Cuomo made promises to those who elected him and less than a year into his administration he is abandoning his own words.

Most New Yorkers are busy with the upcoming Holidays and are unfortunately not paying attention at this time, but when the bill for the Governor's ill-conceived idea comes due, if enacted by those who think spending solves all problems, they will react and Governor Cuomo will pay the price.

It is not too late for the Governor to continue the promises he made to New Yorkers and abandon this quest to keep New York's taxes the highest in the nation. Cuomo's essay in the NY Times is disingenuous and continues the class warfare that is so popular with the Obama Administration and so very anti-American.

BREAKING: NY Daily News says its a done deal. Liz Benjamin reports 5 new brackets under consideration. New Yorkers need to see the fine print, not only the what they want to sell. So far all we know is that they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic so out of control spending continues...they refuse to see the iceberg.

The New York Post features this Andrew Cuomo quote daily on its opinion page now that the Governor has started to hedge on his promise to not raise taxes (which Shaun Marie has blogged about this week).

Now it seems that Cuomo has a growing roster of Republican allies who share his willingness to at least consider (as they so innocently put it) a tax increase.

Mark my words: Once these RINO’s “consider” taking more of other people’s money so they can spend it on bigger government, it won’t be long before they wholeheartedly embrace the idea.

Will Governor Cuomo cave on his fiscal promises? The NY Post Editorial Page will keep his feet to the fire, but will that be enough? We, the beleaguered taxpayers must also make him keep his word. Articles like this and the analysis by The Torch should be a waring to all of us that we must be vigilant despite how the Governor tries to calm our fears. He tried to walk back the article, but didn't convince me that there is no need to worry. After all, many are believing class warfare is acceptable, just listen to Obama and the OWSers'.

Did the stimulus work as well as stated? The latest CBO estimates says NO.

Just think about what else could have been accomplished with this money.

More bad news on NY's economic front. If the pension fund continues to lose money, you will be paying a lot more in taxes, all the more reason to create a new Tier that is based on defined contribution, rather than the current defined benefit.

As anticipated, the Super Committee did not reach any agreement on cutting the deficit. For some analysis read this, this, this, this and this.

Will you personally feel the effect in January? Or will Congress do what it always does?

E. J. McMahon isn't as dire as Gov. Cuomo is on the failure of the Super Committee.

William McGurn writes how government should really stay out of soup kitchens at Thanksgiving. (Personally, government has too much time on its hands and gets involved in far too many things.)

The Washington Post writes about the dificult balance between government and housing finance. If the government did not make unreasonable demands and had not interfered, taxpayers would have a lot more of their own money. Again, government is too big with too much time on its hands.

Thanksgiving is almost here, and I for one have plenty to be thankful for – most of all my family and friends, of course, as well as the freedoms I enjoy as an American.

Looking at the news this week, I’ve found some more reasons to be thankful.

I’m thankful for great thinkers like Charles Krauthammer, who has an amazing ability to weed out the hypocrisy of the left. His takedown of the Obama liberals and their “We can’t wait” silliness is a sight to behold.

I’m thankful that I’ve been able to keep my distance from the Occupy Wall Street protests. Count me among the 99% of Americans who’d rather not be assaulted, diseased or killed all in one afternoon.

I’m thankful that Gov. Cuomo is standing up to the Working Families Party class warriors and pledging to oppose higher taxes for New Yorkers – and you can count on the Conservative Party to keep working to hold the Governor to this promise.

I’m thankful that the Supreme Court will be taking a look at whether ObamaCare is constitutional... and I’m hopeful that the Court will strike down this Big Government overreach.

I’m thankful I wasn’t on this flight to LaGuardia...

It isn't looking good for NYC Comptroller John Liu.

If this is the future for NYC, you will see hard working taxpayers flee, and maybe only OWS'ers will stay. How will the city pay its bill then? Any answer from those who support their antics? This is not the way to win support in NYC or elsewhere.

George Will on Spending ascending - with or without a budget sequester.

Did you know 15 years ago, then Senator Joe Biden made an impassioned plea for a balanced budget amendment and the debt was $107 billion, not the $15 trillion of today? Where does he stand now? Silence from VP Joe Biden....no wonder, since he and Obama have taken office the budget deficit has risen $4.407 trillion! The WSJ calls for a stronger balanced budget amendment than the one being offered today.

Sen. Reid spends too much time in the Capitol, he needs to get out into the real world. Maybe then he will come to understand the real world.

Solyndra not likely to repay us, the taxpayers, but Obama's buddies will most likely get their "investment" back. (Something we won't forget next November!)

Happy Veterans Day to all those who have served our country. Here are a few groups that I believe deserve our support today...

The USO, famous for its work to boost the morale of troops serving around the world.

The Wounded Warrior Project, which supports those who suffered serious injuries while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Here and here are profiles of two warriors with New York connections.

And the Honor Flight Network organizes trips for World War II veterans to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. I know someone who happened to be at Reagan National Airport in Washington when an Honor Flight arrived, and he said it was inspiring, with cheers and applause filling the terminal as the veterans walked off their plane.

The Heritage Foundation celebrates Veterans Day by highlighting the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, which offers short video biographies of over 100 Medal of Honor recipients.

The Weekly Standard looks at The Significance of Veterans Day and examines presidential commemorations of this special day throughout history – including President Obama’s this year, which doesn’t hold up well to scrutiny.

The Washington Times has an interesting look at how the Occupy Wall Street hoodlums are desperate to make it seem as though their protests are supported by veterans.

Bad news for our military on Veterans Day, as Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warns of serious consequences if the deficit “super-committee” fails to reach a deal and sweeping defense cuts are implemented.

As we remember the courage shown by America’s veterans, stories like this remind us of the cowardice shown by many of our politicians, all the way up to the White House.

Proving that he doesn’t have the guts to take on the special interests who are funding his campaign, President Obama has put off an important decision on opening up the Keystone Pipeline – even though this simple act could create more than 20,000 jobs for Americans (and for quite a few veterans in the states that would benefit from this energy expansion).

President Obama says he’s simply being cautious, and that “we should take the time to ensure that all questions are properly addressed and all the potential impacts are properly understood” – and Obama’s environmentalist allies claim this decision is “a very courageous stand.” I say the only “impact” Obama is worried about is how any decision will affect his reelection.
